Plex HiWire Enlists Creative Works for Custom Laser Tag Arena

October 31, 2017 – Mooresville, IN – Plex HiWire, an indoor sports and entertainment franchise, hired us to design and install a custom laser tag arena. The South Carolina based sports park added the immersive, story-driven laser tag experience to their 30,000-square-foot Sandhill location last October. For Plex HiWire’s owner Dr. Mike Harris, adding laser tag meant blurring the lines between fitness and fun.

“This isn’t your kiddie’s laser park,” Harris told Columbia, South Carolina news station WLTX19. “This is really fun; it’s very interactive. It’s not just Red team against Blue team; we’ve got multiple interactive targets that are in there; it’s two stories. And it fits within Plex’s mission, which is to get families moving. So, this fits that.”

Given the nature of Plex’s environment, our own Marsha Brentlinger knew what would inspire active game play.

“We brought a Halo-inspired theme to him,” said Brentlinger. “It had been done at a couple of other locations nowhere close to him. We presented that theme to him as something we thought might be unique and different, and would fit well with what he was trying to accomplish.”

The two story, 3,500-square-foot ‘Halo’ inspired arena features hand painted murals that transport the players between deep regions of space, fractured planetary terrain and the remains of alien spacecrafts. Two teams are pitted against each other and their environment to defeat the “Evil Guardian of the Universe”. By using Laser Force technology, we crafted a custom interactive spacecraft prop that could tag players and be tagged back.

“He was great to work with; he was very specific about what he wanted and how he wanted it to look,” Brentlinger explained. “We worked with him really closely on the design and had a lot of phone calls in regard to murals and props. He was using Laser Force equipment and we did this special, really cool, looks like a jet aircraft prop… we were able to get a lot of the props to suit what he wanted in the arena because he was quite specific.”

Harris sent a Plex HiWire representative to 360 Event prior to our project. 360 Event is a two day educational conference in Indianapolis hosted by us. Attendees have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of FEC and laser tag operations from industry professionals, with topics ranging from site selection and financing to operational fundamentals and hiring.

Plex HiWire’s ‘Sector X’ laser tag arena opened to the public on November 11, 2016.
